Tourist Trophy
SCORE: 92
Tourist Trophy on the Sony Playstation 2 comes from Polyphony
Digital. That name should sound familiar since they are the makers of
the Gran Turismo car racing series. They have given a similar treatment
to motorcycle racing. Racing on two wheels instead of four is a whole
lot different. For one thing it is much more difficult. Expect to crash
(editor: a lot) in this game, thankfully those crashes are handled in a
very classy manner. The riders wear skid suits since they can go upwards
of 200 mph on some tracks. The camera angles also handle crashes in a
way that does not glorify said mistake(s) of the player.
Graphically this game is pretty. Most of the game's areas are bright
and colorful, unless the player is going through a tunnel (or shaded
areas). Some of the backgrounds are breath taking, but don't appreciate
too much, or crashing will be the result. The details are nicely done,
especially on the different motorcycles. The outfits of the riders
looked different but not the riders themselves. The WMG only noticed
males as the operators of the motorcycles in this game. Wholesome images
are used appropriately in this game.
The WMG could not tell the difference between motorcycles in the
sound department, but then the WMG can't tell the difference in real
life either. There is something powerful to hear a motorcycle engine rev
up, and Tourist Trophy captures that quite well. The music ranges, but
the WMG was not offended by anyone of it. It is worthy of noting that
the music is subdued slightly, so it is more of a background. The sounds
of the motorcycles really take center stage in the sound department.
Tourist Trophy has a lot of bikes, riding gear, and tracks available
for play, and replay. Quite a few items are unlocked after completing
certain requirements (i.e. getting a certain license). Due to the
learning curve in this game, tracks will be replayed quite often in
order to beat them. If the reader is the kind of person who is easily
frustrated, then renting this game first makes sense. If that kind of a
challenge is up the reader's alley then this game is definitely worth
the money.
The controls took the WMG a little bit to get used to. Motorcycle
racing is way, way diverse from car racing. The game's control layout
works pretty good, and the design of some of those tracks is mind
boggling. Crashing did not bother the WMG, in fact it was funny. The
humor comes from the reality that the WMG will never purchase a
motorcycle because the hospital stays would be too costly. A game like
this is much cheaper than a bike, and much safer.
This game is safe for the entire family, but due to the difficulty -
it is not for everyone. Easily frustrated people should pass. It is
worthy to note that there is a license system to teach the player how to
ride a motorcycle that the WMG found quite helpful. This game was a joy
to play, and review. A sequel is definitely needed to this game, maybe
one where an ultra easy setting is available. This is the kind of game
that the WMG would recommend to a pastor. Tourist Trophy was quite a
humbling experience that the WMG sincerely appreciates.
