Tetris DS

Tetris is one of the longest running puzzle games in the history of video games. For a lot of the long time gamers, the question has been how can Tetris be improved? Well Nintendo answer that with Tetris DS. This Nintendo DS game is completely Nintendo themed. Around the action levels of 8-bit Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, or Samus can be watched. This is a wonderful addition, even though it may distract the player from the Tetris action. Speaking of the Tetris action, there are some awesome new modes in this game. One of the best new modes is push. Two players (player vs. the computer for example) play against each other on the same screen. One player is going from top to bottom, while the other is going from bottom to top. Each time a player gets a line completed, the screen goes up/down for them. Push the action past a certain line and you are the winner.

The graphics in Tetris DS are very bright and colorful. The inclusion of the Nintendo themed characters in the background really adds a new dimension to Tetris. The details are pretty good, and the artwork is stellar. Wholesome images are also used properly in this game. The special effects that are given when a player completes a Tetris (getting four lines at the same time) is a real treat.

The sounds in this game are very crisp and clear. The music is quite hummable, and most players will find the music stuck in their heads after playing this game. The sounds work well in Tetris DS, and will remind older gamers of those classic franchises. Newer gamers can get a history lesson into some of the things that made these classic games so legendary. The only complaint this reviewer has is the sounds that go along with the completing of a Tetris were not at the same level as the graphics.

There are enough modes to keep every gamer busy for months to come. Add in the ability to play other gamers on the wi-fi, and that extends it to years. The wi-fi has a pretty good ranking system that we at FFG found to work quite well. This game is fun for quite a few different people to play. It is definitely worth the money in this reviewers humble opinion. The only possible problem is if someone gets addicted to video games easily - such a person should avoid Tetris DS. Like everything it needs to be done in moderation.

The game's main control is rotating, and dropping the blocks. These controls are quick, responsive, and the level design works well. This game was played by a couple of the staff here at Family Friendly Gaming, and everyone had a lot of fun playing this game.

When supporters of video games defend video games - Tetris is one game that they champion as teaching no lessons. Actually Tetris teaches perseverance, concentration, pattern matching, and improves cognitive skills. Tetris DS is safe for the entire family. It was a joy, and a pleasure for this reviewer to play this game. There really needs to be more video games just like this on the market. The addition of the wi-fi mode, Nintendo themes, six different play modes (especially the push mode) puts Tetris DS on the short list of greatest video games of all time. It earns our seal of approval.
