Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team

Nintendo has dug deep with a Diglett with their recent release of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue on the amazingly popular Nintendo DS. For the first time ever, the player gets to play a Pokémon. A series of questions at the beginning of the game determine which Pokémon that player will start out with. The player was once a human, and somehow got turned into a Pokemon. That is just one of the many mysteries the player has to solve. The story is interesting, involved, and deep. There are towns filled with Pokémon that buy, sell, train, store, link moves, and open up areas for your friends. The core of the game (editor: which the name implies) is the rescue missions the player goes on. Other Pokémon need help, and it is up to the rescue teams to provide that assistance. Most of the game involves helping someone else out, okay some Pokémon out. Each of the dungeons randomly generate each time they are entered.

Graphically Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue is very bright and colorful. All of the Pokémon are represented quite well in these models. The special effects on some of the attacks are very nice to see. Well, they are nice to see until you realize how much damage was done to your rescue team. The artwork has a nice fantasy feel to it, that really opens up the Pokémon fantasy universe quite well. Extra long dungeons get a graphical change after so many floors.

The sounds in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue are decent, with some good music, and some (quite honestly) music that was not memorable at all. It is good that the music was not a determent since many of the levels later in the game get long. The sounds are crisp, and clear in all areas, especially the fighting portion. The sounds, and music are cheerful.

Interested in trying to collect them all in this game? If the answer to that question is yes, then prepare to be playing this game for many months. There are plenty of different Pokémon that may be interested in joining your team. Thousands of items await the player, and randomly generating dungeons keep it fresh. For those that do not appreciate randomly generating dungeons let me encourage you to not pass on this game just because of that. Codes can be given so another player can assist if your rescue team needs to be rescued.

The gameplay is a mixture of turn based, with real time. Players see their characters, and the enemies on screen. Each character has their own turn, but it is way more fluid than turn based strategy games. Another difference is the floors of the dungeons are large, and unknown (editor: that means the player must explore each floor to find the stairs to the next floor). The touch screen controls work amazingly well, and the layout of the controls is awesome. The level design is random, so at times it is great, and at times it is frustrating. The RPG Master found this to be a fun little game.

The religion of evolution is present in this game, but plays a minor role compared to other Pokémon video games. We know how troubling that teaching is to thousands of our readers, and are very careful with games like this one. The game can be played, and beaten without that even coming up (editor: seems to have been toned down). There is cartoon violence of these little critters. The main theme of helping out others is very nice to see.
