MLB06 The Show

Sports gamers have something to celebrate in MLB06 The Show. The production value of this baseball game is so high that it feels like a watching a real game (editor: at many times). The announcers are so intelligent that everything this reviewer heard them say was accurate, and relevant. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) captured the spirit of a baseball game. Comebacks work just as they do on the real fields, as does shutting down the other team when your team is ahead. SCEA certainly swung for the fences with this game, and those into baseball games will certainly reap the benefits of their efforts.

Graphically MLB06 The Show does a good job, but not the best on the market. The images are bright and colorful. The stadiums, and grass on the fields looks amazingly realistic. The facial details of the players is a little weak compared to other baseball games currently on the market. The one troubling image is the batter sometimes scratches (or adjusts) below his belt. It is understandable that SCEA wants to make the game as realistic as possible, but in this reviewers humble opinion - they could have left out that part of a baseball game.

The sounds work well in this game, especially the crack of the bat. There is something very satisfying about hearing that crack of the bat, and watching the ball sail out of the stadium (especially with the bases loaded). The announcers are amazingly accurate. Every single comment really added to the realism of this game. The music is a mix, but this reviewer always found it to be energetic, up-beat, and uplifting.

MLB06 The Show has so many different modes to it, that the average gamer can easily play this game for an entire year, and still have not played everything. The replay scenes throughout the game are frequent, but can be bypassed at the press of a button. Two players can play each other live in person, or across the internet; so this game is fun for more than one person at once. In this reviewer's opinion this game is definitely worth the price of admission.

Baseball games have an image of being hard to get into, because of all the stats. Thankfully MLB06 has enough easy modes for the newcomer to baseball games, and it has enough stats for the baseball fanatic. SCEA did a wonderful job of making this game accessible to all levels of baseball gamer. This game is a blast to play, and even losing is not a crushing blow. The pitching, and hitting interfaces work quite well. The pitcher has a gauge, a grid to pitch into, and a selection of pitches. The batter has a grid, can guess the pitch, and then the player times the swing. If all of that sounds too confusing, no worries because the easiest mode does away with the grid. Fielding has the closest player selectable, and the player moves them to the ball. Pressing of the four major buttons determines which base the fielder throws to.

This is the kind of game this reviewer really enjoys playing. There is challenge to it, but for the most part nothing offensive about it. A pastor could play a game like this, because it is safe for the entire family. There needs to be more games like this. MLB06 The Show can, and does promote family time. In an interactive way the next generation can be taught about the game of baseball.
