Garfield A Tail of Two Kitties

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties on the Nintendo DS is a pleasant release from The Game Factory (aka American Game Factory). The sarcastic, and cynical fat cat accidentally made his way to London. The game is based on the summer blockbuster movie, which is based off of the comic strips that have entertained since the year of our Lord 1978. Quite a few features of the Nintendo DS are utilized including the touch screen, and the microphone. The player must go through quite a few levels to guide Garfield to the palace from his hotel room. The First Cat Perspective is one of the more fascinating features of this hand held game. The bulk of the main game play is 2D side scrolling action adventure with 3D backgrounds.

Graphically Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties is very bright and colorful. The menu screens span both screens on the Nintendo DS and are spectacular. The graphics of the side scrolling action adventure levels are a little grainy. The rotation effects are done very smoothly indeed. Wholesome images are used properly in this game. In some ways this game looks like a Gameboy Advance game that was tweaked for the Nintendo DS.

The sounds of Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties are spectacular. Every time Garfield is hit he makes a cat sound, and this sound is so realistic the people within earshot of the Nintendo DS thought it was a real live cat. That level of realism works well for this game. The music is very cheerful, and uplifting. The sound effects (aside from cat sounds) all work really well in this game.

There are plenty of items to collect, and many of them are hidden throughout the levels. There are also quite a few levels to keep the gamer busy in Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. If you are not into getting every single food item in every single level, then there will not be much reason to replay. This is a game that in this reviewers humble opinion is worth your hard earned dollars. There is some real character to this game. It would have been nice if there would have been some of the well known Jim Davis humor.

The most fascinating feature in Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties is the First Cat Perspective(FCP). These are levels where the player looks around a room through the eyes of Garfield. This is a wonderful break in the normal side scrolling action that exhibits true creativity from The Game Factory. The only improvement to it this reviewer could think of is getting to walk around in that perspective (maybe in a sequel). The side scrolling action works well, and the game always makes sure the player can see where to jump next. The controls work amazingly well, especially blowing in the microphone to make Garfield meow. The layout of the controls works great, and this is a fun game to play. It actually took longer to beat than I expected.

All of the action in the game is completely non-violent. Garfield must avoid the enemies, and that can at times require some additional thought. This game is safe for the entire family, it was my pleasure to play, and review it. I really hope they releases a sequel to this game, and fleshes out the FCP. - Paul
