National Gaming Day at your Library

CHICAGO - Each year, families from coast to coast visit their local libraries to take part in the American Library Association's (ALA) National Gaming Day @ your library. On Nov. 13, more than 1,800 libraries will showcase family friendly gaming events that demonstrate the social and recreational value of board and video games.

The ALA anticipates that more than 31,000 people will participate in National Gaming Day 2010. Libraries in every state in the U.S. and in Argentina, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Pakistan and Puerto Rico will participate in a variety of gaming activities including two national video game tournaments. Players of all ages and experience levels will play Rock Band or Super Smash Bros. Brawl and will track their rankings via national leaderboards.

"National Gaming Day provides an opportunity for libraries to continue their role as the heart of the community by bringing a variety of library patrons together through gaming," said ALA President Roberta Stevens. "Libraries offer more than just books, and gaming is an example of how libraries provide social and cultural programs that encourage interaction."

Through a generous donation from North Star Games, 1,500 participating libraries received a free copy Wits & Wagers Family, specifically for play during National Gaming Day.

“National Gaming Day is a one-of-a-kind event that brings thousands and thousands of people together in play, which is why North Star Games is proud to participate for the second straight year,” said Dominic Crapuchettes, co-founder of North Star Games. “Board games represent one of many experiences where learning can also be entertaining.”

National Gaming Day @ your library is an annual initiative sponsored by the American Library Association, and celebrates the popularity, as well as the recreational and educational value of board, card and video games.
