Patience in furniture construction

Buying new furniture can be a great experience. With so many options, styles, and materials to choose from, it can be an excellent opportunity to stretch your creative muscle. You get to choose the design you want, the materials you want, and you get to match your purchase with your existing room décor. Whether you buy your furniture from a store or online, there is one part of the process that unfortunately cannot be avoided: the assembly process.

Assembling furniture, beds for example, can be quite an ordeal in-and-of-itself. Having impatient and noisy children can only exacerbate the situation. If the furniture you have purchased is for your child (toddler beds or bunk beds for example), they may be even more impatient since they will be anxious to use their new bed. Things like bunk beds in particular have a jungle gym like quality that can be quite enticing to a small child. How can you teach your children patience when constructing their furniture?

For starters you can attempt to be rational with the children. Sit them down before the project has begun and explain that the sooner you complete the bed, the sooner they can start enjoying it. You may be surprised at how this simple explanation can help enlighten your child. Often time’s parents make the mistake of assuming they can’t be straight forward with their children, a child’s maturity level in certain situations can be a welcome surprise from time to time.

You can also take this time to help your child feel more like a grown up. Ask your child to assist you the assembly of your furniture. Have them hand you tools or help hold pieces in place. Try to turn a chore into a fun experience for your son or daughter. They will most likely enjoy the fact that you have included them in a “grown up” project and will refrain from complaining during the process.
