Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1

I ran across Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 at one of our local comic book stores and decided to check it out. I have not played or read anything related to Dungeons & Dragons for some time. I was curious about Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1. Thankfully I had the money to make the purchase to read it and make this review. Please be aware there will be spoilers in this review. Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 is split into two different stories. The first story takes up twelve pages. The second story takes up nine pages. Then we have next months cover, alternate covers, and a few advertisements. This is the typical format of IDW Publishing comic books.

The first story in Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 is about a doctor by the name of Mordenhelm. She has a young lady as a patient in Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1. This young lady is bandaged all up. The doctor claims she saved the young ladies life and that she found her in a dire situation. We have no way of knowing if any of this is true. The young lady cannot remember anything. She does not even know her name. So the good doctor in Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 decides to name her Miranda. The doctor insists that she rests even though she wants to find answers to her past. There are wild beasts out in Lamordia.

The colors chosen for Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 are a bit on the creepy and strange side. There are discussions on things like morality and kindness within Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1. I expect there might be some twist coming to the doctor and Miranda in the future. Maybe that is my cynical nature coupled with my past experiences with Dungeons & Dragons. The doctor in Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 does not want the bandages messed with. What is she hiding? There is some definite backstory that we need to learn about. I hope future issues explain some of these things better. I have a few of those issues so I will hopefully be able to find out.

The second story within Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 is about a mother and her child. Another child goes to the lake and brings back a frog with multiple eyes. A little boy takes the frog back to the lake. His mother freaks out because the lake is dangerous. Then a monster appears and kidnaps the boy. The mother goes into the water to save her son. She winds up dying as the monster attacks her. The issues families can have with Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 are blood and violence. I honestly expected more monsters within Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1. Maybe that doctor is going to be horrible and evil in the future.

All in all Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 did not impress me much. In some ways Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 feels more horror to me. The colors and shading are on the creepy side. The son making a mistake and losing his mother is just a horrible thing to happen. There was not much uplifting within Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1. I will read a few more issues and decide if I want to continue with this series. Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1 is not something I recommend to families. Those that embrace darkness may enjoy Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft #1. I personally prefer to be in the light. It is warmer.
