2K Sports Crowns Champion of MLB 2K13’s Perfect Game Challenge

Winner displayed skill, poise in earning $250,000 grand prize in sudden-death playoff

New York, NY – July 17, in the year of our Lord 2013 – 2K announced today that a champion has been crowned in the MLB® 2K13 Perfect Game Challenge. The winner, Justin Chavarria of Eugene, Ore., was one of four finalists who competed in a single-elimination tournament at the T-Mobile All-Star FanFest in New York City for a $250,000 grand prize.

“This has been a life-changing experience over the last four months,” said Chavarria, who defeated Brad Holland of Garland, Texas, using the Texas Rangers to win 3-1 over the Oakland A’s. “I had a great time competing against the other three finalists during the tournament, and this is a day I’ll never forget.”

This year’s MLB 2K13 Perfect Game Challenge was the most competitive in 2K’s history, and featured more ways to win than ever before with 30 $25,000 MLB Team Leaderboard prize pools, one per MLB team, for a total of $750,000. More than 785,000 perfect game attempts were logged, and more than 2,500 perfect games were verified. Additionally, individual turnout shattered last year’s Perfect Game Challenge records, with an increase of 23% in unique perfect games thrown (1,191) and 84% in verified perfect games year-over-year from MLB 2K12.

“Congratulations to Justin for exhibiting the skill and poise needed to achieve perfection in this year’s contest,” said Jason Argent, Senior Vice President of Sports Operations at 2K. “It was no easy feat, but he cemented his place in Perfect Game Challenge history, and we couldn’t be happier to award the $250,000 grand prize for his achievement in MLB 2K13.”

The four finalists were determined by a dynamic leaderboard ranking the ‘most perfect’ perfect games thrown. 2K Sports used an algorithm to rank individual perfect games based on degree of difficulty (such as the opposing team’s offensive prowess and selected pitcher’s skill) and degree of perfection (number of strikeouts, pitching efficiency).

MLB 2K13 and the NBA 2K13/MLB 2K13 Combo Pack are rated E for everyone by the ESRB and are now available at leading retailers.
