Paper Mario

A reader request came in for a review of Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64. So I got to playing this Nintendo 64 role playing game as time allowed. Thankfully Family Friendly Gaming has a physical copy of this game thanks to the wise purchasing of our editor in chief. He gives so much to Family Friendly Gaming that we will never ever be able to pay him back properly.

Paper Mario is a 3D role playing game with 2D characters. Paper characters is what inhabits this Mushroom Kingdom World. The turn based battles also require some skill. Press the right buttons in the right combinations at the right times and you will get extra attacks, and/or do more damage. Paper Mario is not one of those games you can press a button and the attack commences without your involvement.

The storyline in Paper Mario is pretty typical. Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach, the Star Rod, and the Star Spirits. We must save them all by defeating Bowser's minions, and then Bowser himself. We have a variety of challenges and earn new companions while we play Paper Mario. Different companions for Mario will have different skills. Some work better in specific areas.

There are three stats in Paper Mario we level up. They are HP, FP, and BP. Those stand for hit points, flower points, and badge points. What the player invests in will determine how they will play Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64. I like how leveling up heals Mario in Paper Mario. This can be a slow game with little damage done to the enemies. I had to grind a lot in Paper Mario to progress.

It is awesome having all these party members in Paper Mario. Unfortunately we can only use one at a time. I personally like Super Mario RPG much more than Paper Mario. That RPG is more my speed, and my style. Paper Mario tried to do some different things. Sort of a hybrid between a RPG and an action game. For me it was not that great of an experience. Especially all these years later. Nice music in Paper Mario.
