Garfield Kart

Garfield Kart is a kart racing game featuring plenty of Garfield characters. This iOS (and Android) app has a lot of things going for it. We have great graphics, kart racing, Garfield and friends, and great sound bytes. What more could a family ask for?

A nice learning curve is something on my personal list as a reviewer. Garfield Kart is hard. The computer controlled characters are tough to beat. On the first race, and on the first circuit. This game is difficult. Kids just give up because Garfield Kart is too hard. This is what hurts this app.

There are two control schemes in Garfield Kart. Players can use arrow keys on the left side, or tilting the device with the gyroscope. There is also a brake button, and a power slide button on the right side of the screen. Power sliding long enough builds up a boost once the player levels out.

Garfield Kart is kind enough to offer the player a tutorial. This is where players can learn the various control schemes, weapons and racing skills. Coins are earned in races, and then spent on additional content in the game. There are in app purchases if you are not patient enough to build up the coins. There really is no need for in app purchases since this app costs $0.99 cents. Apple missed the cartoon violence in the weapons that are used to spin out vehicles.

There are multiple racers to unlock. There are also multiple race tracks. Garfield Kart is a very unforgiving game. It is easy to go from first to last. It is much harder to get up into first place - unless you use a boost at the start of a race. Weapon items are way too random. I would be in last place and get worthless spring items.

My biggest issue with Garfield Kart is the balance. It is way too imbalanced, and very much against the player. This was right from the beginning. Garfield Kart could learn from kart racers like Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Mario Kart. Start easy, and then progressively get more difficult. With a few tweaks Garfield Kart could be a great kart racing franchise.
