Major League Baseball 2K11
SCORE: 88
There has been a debate for years now
concerning graphics versus game play. Major League Baseball 2K11 on the
Wii has fantastic game play. The graphics are another story though. I
had been playing a Playstation 3 baseball game not too long ago, and was
blown away. I started to play Major League Baseball 2K11, and the first
thing I noticed was the downgrade in the graphics. My initial reaction
was negative. But the more I dug into Major League Baseball 2K11 the
more I realized how solid this baseball game is.
It also dawned on me that it is not fair to compare Major League
Baseball 2K11 on the Wii to a Playstation 3 baseball game. So I decided
to limit my scope to the other Wii baseball games. Which are mainly
arcade style, and not simulators. Major League Baseball 2K11 does
include an arcade like game in the form of the Mini-Diamond.
I won't lie, my first reaction to the graphics in Major League Baseball
2K11 is how bad they were. Of course that was comparison. Now I did find
some glitches here and there in the game. Part of the batter's name on
his back would white out, or the third base coaches box would lose part
of the line. These are minor issues, but definitely present. I also
noticed that certain home runs would look the same, as would fielders
chasing down a ball. The fans are okay in Major League Baseball 2K11. I
liked how many of them were wearing the home teams colors.
The commentary is where Major League Baseball 2K11 improves. I noticed
some very intelligent comments by the announcing crew in this home
console video game. They got a few things wrong, or were behind. I did
notice how many times they were right though. I had no outs, and men on
the corners. A double play at first and second is what happened. The
announcer commented on that, but made no mention of the run coming in.
So Major League Baseball 2K11 is not perfect. The music is very rockish
in this Wii game. Individual songs can be turned off in case they are
not to your liking.
Major League Baseball 2K11 contains numerous ways the game can be
played. There is a season, franchise, tournament, exhibition mode, home
run derby, and mini diamond. There is actually more in this Wii baseball
game than I was expecting. All of the MLB teams are present and
accounted for. The more I played Major League Baseball 2K11, the more it
endeared itself to me. Sure this game is not the best graphically, but
it is a solid baseball game with a lot to offer.
I started playing Major League Baseball 2K11 with the Seattle Mariners,
and was getting stomped by the San Francisco Giants. I went into the
options and found a ton of different features to make this game easier.
Not only are their preset options, but there is a custom mode. Major
League Baseball 2K11 can be made very easy as you learn. The game also
suggests what pitch and where to place it. My one problem with this is
how slow it is in showing where to place the pitch. I would have liked
that to come up quicker.
Major League Baseball 2K11 teaches families about the sport of baseball.
There is a lot of strategy in this game. Do you go for a power swing?
Where will the pitcher throw, and what kind of pitch will it be? The Wii
Remote is used for both pitching and batting. I found my right arm got
more of a work out, but it was nice to get a little exercise.
I am concerned that Major League Baseball 2K11 has hit a wall in terms
of graphics on the Wii. I have liked this franchise for many years now.
I hope to be reviewing this franchise many years from now. Major League
Baseball 2K11 continues the solid tradition of the franchise. It was a
pleasure for me to review the copy that came in for us to review.
